The 'Ai’ part is a word pun because 'Ai’ means love in Japanese, so you could say it means 'Roy/Hawkeye love’. So, to make a long story short, you could say it’s shortened from 'Roi/Hookuai’ or 'Roy/Hawkeye’. The 'Ai’ part comes from the English transliteration of how Riza’s name is spelt in Japanese: “Hookuai”. Roi is the direct furigana translation from the Japanese script, but on all official documents with his name in English, it says ‘Roy’ (even in Japan).
